People

Walt Disney once said,

You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.

Yes, imagination is extremely important, but goals rarely come to fruition without the help of others. Books need editors. (This blog needs an editor!) Websites need testers. Dishes need tasters. Disney’s vision required a team–there’s no other way the empire would have been built without the help of many smart and creative people.

This is true for school districts. There are big things happening in education right now, and a lot of wonderful tools are being created. Like any endeavor, it will take a dedicated team for all the pieces to fall into place.

EdmodoCon 2014 was an amazing experience. Being around motivated educators and the smart and talented Edmodo team was truly a privilege.

There’s so much that I learned, but the truth that resonates with me the most right now is the importance of assembling the right people to get a job done. Whether it’s teachers at a school or programmers at a business, the importance of finding innovative and fearless coworkers cannot be over exaggerated. As my new friend Nathan would say, we need to surround ourselves with (and be) “cliff divers”: people who are willing to try new things and think outside the box.

I’ll post a link to the EdmodoCon presentations as soon as Edmodo releases the videos in case you missed them. If you’re a teacher, it’ll be a great way to kick off the year.
