Make sure there’s joy.

I’ve chosen the word “joy” carefully because its presence proves that everything else that’s necessary is there: classroom management, creative lesson plans, engaging instruction, use of technology, respect for everyone, love for learning, peace, care, clear communication…

There’s so much that’s needed–this is why passionate teachers are worth their weight in gold. In addition to teaching, educators must ensure that all their ducks are in a row so that students experience joy. This doesn’t mean the kids are ecstatic at all times–they don’t need to be brimming with excitement to write a collaborative paper or present a Prezi. Whether the assignment is complete fun or extremely hard work, students must know joy when learning.

When there’s joy in the classroom, everything else that’s needed is present. You can quote me on that.
